Today in class we went over the remaining questions in the study guide. This is due to be turned in for a test grade on Monday. We discussed symbolism in the novel too. We got in groups and identified several character traits for Max from the final chapters. The test will be Wednesday (writing) and Thursday (objective) of next week. Today in class we awarded our prizes to our Shark Tank winner. Congratulations to Lucy Theetge and Jordan Ewell! I showed the class the rubric for the WebQuest, which is due Monday. This can be found on this site by looking at the Freak the Mighty unit page, or logging in to our google classroom. This will count as a quiz grade. Use the rubric to be sure that you are doing what is expected. We also wrote journal entry #12, which can be found by clicking on the journal tab above. Students read an article on bullying that goes along with the novel and answered some questions. If not finished, this is homework. This can be found on the Freak the Mighty unit page. I returned the presentation rubric.

Groups practiced reading the poem aloud as we looked at identifying meaning for unfamiliar words, the similarities and differences between the two statues, and the connection that the title has to the meaning of the poem . We identified a theme and came up with supporting details using the say, mean, matter method. The task is below. The theme we chose is "the importance of family," or " people will go to great lengths to protect their family." Come with THREE details that show Rikki, Nagaina, and Darzee being motivated by, or doing something extreme to protect their families.

We got in to temporary groups and each group read and annotated an article that will help with their understanding of "A Christmas Carol". Each group should be prepared to share out tomorrow. Today in class I returned the vocab quiz from Tuesday. Quiz corrections are due tomorrow on a separate sheet of paper. Include the correct word and definition as it appears on the original quiz. We also talked about the structure of an essay. Groups created a shared document and added their literary element paragraph to that. If you were absent, check your google drive. This document should be called Literary Element Essay and can be found by clicking on the "Shared with me" option on the left hand column. Copy and paste your paragraph to this document.

Today in class we went over the remainder of the "Thank You M'am" study guide. We also worked on revising the Literary Element paragraph from a few weeks back. Today in class we mapped the plot of "Seventh Grade" and went over the new vocabulary for "Thank You M'am". I handed out the study guide for this story; it should be #8 in your binder. It can be found on the "Thank You M'am" unit page. We read and annotated a brief article on The Harlem Renaissance on page 129 in your green book. We began to read the story on page 9. For tomorrow, finish the story with annotations, and identify ONE character trait for Roger in your study guide. Include 2-3 pieces of evidence from the text for support. The vocab quiz on these words will be Monday.

Write this in your study guide. Include specific details from the story's text that support your trait. Include 3 supporting details. Do the same thing for Mr. Bueller and Teresa. Today in class we reviewed, briefly, for tomorrow's vocab quiz on "Seventh Grade". There is a link on the "Seventh Grade" unit page to flashcards and review games on Quizlet. We also finished going over yesterday's fragments and run-on's practice. We began reading the short story "Seventh Grade". We read to about the middle of page 3. Look at the study guide on the "Seventh Grade" unit page. As you read, look for things that help you identify things about Victor's personality. Focus on annotating. Highlight words, phrases, details that help you "see" Victor. Highlight words you don't know, make notations in the margins (observations, questions, thoughts). Tomorrow, come with two annotations per each page that we read. I will sign quality cards tomorrow during the quiz.

Today in class we wrote the summary response on the school's plagiarism policy. If you didn't get it done in class, please have it finished for tomorrow. If you were out, please have it finished and ready to be turned in tomorrow. Several people did not complete the reading and writing survey on google classroom. If there was time left in class, they were able to complete the survey. If not, it needs to be done ASAP. It was due today, and failure to have it done resulted in a 0 homework grade.

Yesterday and today students worked on what it means to be a productive member of a group and identifying characteristics of a productive group. They created a set off guidelines or rules for their to group to follow and help in its function. We will continue our group work next week as each group will have to complete a group task.

Today in class I collected the parent form from the classroom rules and procedures handout. I handed out the September calendar and binder table of contents. We went over extra credit opportunities, and I passed out the "textbook" that we will use for the year. We also toured this website. Monday, there will be a quiz on the rules and procedures that we discussed yesterday and today. Anyone who did not have the parent form signed needs to turn it in Monday. Also, all students need to have all of their ELA supplies. This will count as an extra-credit quiz grade.
